What to Eat in Cancun – A Foodie’s Guide to the Best Eats in Mexico

What’s the one thing you should always eat when you’re traveling somewhere new? Food, of course! And when that place happens to be Mexico, then you can’t afford to pass up an opportunity like this. From margaritas to guacamole to tacos and everything in between, here are some of the tastiest options on offer throughout Cancun!

Street Food

Cancun is a place where you’ll find some of the most delicious street food in all of Mexico. With influences from around the world, there are dishes like tacos, quesadillas and empanadas that you won’t find anywhere else. If you’re looking for something different than traditional Mexican food, look no further than these treats.

Tacos

Cancun has dozens of taco stands, so you’ll never run out of options. There are also some more upscale places that specialize in tacos, like El Rey del Taco, which is famous for their ceviche and shrimp tacos.

Burritos

Mexican food is well-known for its burritos, which are a type of sandwich that can be eaten at any time of the day. The ingredients inside a burrito vary depending on where you go, but most often include beans, rice, cheese, and either chicken or pork. Burritos are usually grilled and wrapped up in a tortilla. The best places for burritos in Cancun are El Rey del Taco and Fajita Burrito King.

Quesadillas

Cancun is known for its seafood, but it has some of the best Mexican food you’ll find anywhere. One of my favorite dishes, quesadillas, are a traditional Mexican dish made from tortillas and cheese. The basic quesadilla is made with a flour tortilla that is heated on a griddle or frying pan until crispy. Then cheese is placed on one side of the tortilla and folded over to form a half moon shape and heated until both sides are golden brown.

Enchiladas

Mexican cuisine has a lot of regional variations, but a few staples remain. Enchiladas are a classic dish that can be found all over the country. They come with corn or flour tortillas and are often topped with shredded beef, cheese, sour cream or tomato sauce. Cheese enchiladas are usually served smothered in green chili sauce.

Tamales

The street food can be excellent and as good as you might find anywhere in Mexico, with tacos and tamales being my personal favorites. Both are sold on almost every block of every city. Tacos may come with chicken, pork, fish or other protein served on a corn tortilla topped with tomato and cilantro. Tamales come wrapped in leaves with meat or seafood, black beans, potatoes and other vegetables inside–and may be filled or topped with salsa or mole sauce.

Pozole

Cancun is home to some of the freshest seafood you’ll find in Mexico. Pozole, a spicy stew with pork and hominy, is popular here. This hearty dish can be found at most local eateries serving Mexican cuisine. For a lighter take on this traditional dish, look for bowls made from lettuce leaves instead of corn husks or thin flatbreads.

Mole

The Mole poblano is a traditional Mexican dish that originated in the state of Puebla and it can be made with chicken, pork or beef. The dish has an earthy flavor as it contains garlic, chiles, onion and tomato paste. It is usually served with rice and beans or potatoes.

Chiles en Nogada

The chiles en nogada is a dish of poblano peppers filled with ground meat, raisins, and apples, topped with a walnut cream sauce and pomegranate seeds. This hearty dish is traditionally served as part of a holiday meal in Mexico. The ingredients for this dish can be difficult to find if you are not traveling to México during the holiday season.

Tres Leches Cake

The tres leches cake, also known as a three milk cake, is a popular Mexican dessert. It was named for its three ingredients: evaporated milk, condensed milk and heavy cream. The tres leches cake is an incredibly moist cake because of all of the added dairy products. It is made from a very simple batter that includes only eggs, sugar, flour and baking powder.
